  • Cabbage & Chemicals

Students in Ms. Bailey's science classes completed a lab on Friday. Using red cabbage and hot water, students had to extract the juice from the cabbage, divide it into three cups, and observe how different substances cause chemical reactions. Students found the experiment highly engaging and extra colorful!.

  • Community-based Learning

Students in Ms. Stiefel's classroom got the opportunity to practice real-life job skills this past week. Students took orders from SMS and CHS staff members for lunch from our local Thatcher's. Students added the totals for each order, picked up the lunches from the local restaurant, delivered lunches to the staff, and then collected the payments. Staff support is invaluable in giving our students the opportunity to work in our community.

  • 9-11 Commemoration

Students honored local first responders, military, and medical personnel at a 9-11 Commemorative Event on Thursday, September 30. After reading the September Book of the Month, 30,000 Stitches by Amanda Davis, students reflected on the meaning of community. The book recounts the story of the National 9-11 Flag which was flown at the site of the Twin Towers during recovery efforts and then was pieced back together by communities around the country. Student reflections on the book's theme were pieced together on a board in our commons area and were transformed into a flag. This flag served as the backdrop for our 9-11 event.

  • Watercolor Mandalas

Mandalas are radially symmetrical designs which grow outward from a central point. Mandala is Sanskrit for circle and is a spiritual symbol used in cultures around the world for healing purposes and meditation. First, students used a compass to make a large circle, then split the circle into 12 sections. Each student created their own designs for each mandala section. After discussing basic color theory – primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, we used watercolor paint to make our mandalas beautiful!
