Nutrition and Fitness

The winning recipe for a healthy lifestyle includes a combination of both good nutrition and physical activity. Your body needs a variety of nutrient rich foods to grow and prevent illness. And your body also needs to move and exercise every day.

Well-nourished students have higher test scores, increased school attendance, improved concentration, and improved classroom behavior. Students, who are physically fit, sleep better and are better able to handle the physical and emotional challenges that they encounter during the day.

Key things you need to know about leading a healthy lifestyle are:

  • Eat a healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables and whole grain products
  • Control portion sizes and never "supersize"
  • Get active for at least 60 minutes, five times a week for ages 6-18
  • Avoid tobacco and illegal drugs all together

Chattooga County Schools is excited to announce three key initiatives for the upcoming school year, designed to support the well-being and success of every student in our district:

1. Promoting Healthy Eating

Good nutrition is essential for student growth, focus, and academic achievement. This year, we’re enhancing our efforts to provide nutritious meals in school cafeterias, educate students on smart food choices, and encourage healthy habits at home.

2. Encouraging Regular School Attendance

Every day counts! Consistent attendance is one of the most important factors in student success. We’re launching new awareness campaigns and community events to partner with families in supporting regular school attendance. Our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive—every single day.

3. Literacy: The Key to Lifelong Learning

Literacy is the foundation of all learning, and our district is committed to ensuring every student has the tools and support they need to become confident, capable readers. By prioritizing literacy across all grade levels, we are empowering students to succeed academically, think critically, and unlock a lifetime of opportunity. Through targeted programs, community partnerships, and innovative initiatives, we are creating a culture where reading is not just a skill—but a gateway to success.

Together, these initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to nurturing healthy, engaged, and successful learners. Thank you for your continued support!
